Stahn earns Eagle Scout award

Jeremiah Stahn has "fledged."

On Sunday, March 13, this recent graduate of Sisters High School received his Eagle Scout Award at a Court of Honor at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Other members of troop 188, sponsored by the church, were in attendance as well as a big crowd of family, friends, and scout leaders.

Several of the leaders spoke of their experiences with Jeremiah on high adventure outings that included canoeing in Canada, bicycling in the San Juans, and 50-mile hikes and bike rides around Oregon. These outings are designed to build character as well as develop skills needed to survive outdoors in various climatic conditions.

Jeremiah spoke to the group about how the scout program helped him grow as an individual and thanked all the leaders who helped him along the way. He especially acknowledged Peter Liddell, who was not only his mentor in scouting but also in life.

Liddell said that he was impressed with Jeremiah's willingness to always help the younger scouts, especially at camp.

"He also had a tougher time than most when it came to injuries on our outings, but he kept on going without complaining," Liddell added.

Jeremiah also gave credit for much of his success to his mother, who was a constant source of support and reminders.

For his Eagle Scout project, Jeremiah collected old textbooks from COCC as well as local high schools and took them to a prison ministry in Portland, which then distributed them to prisons to encourage vocational interests among inmates.

Jeremiah is currently enrolled at COCC and anticipates using his skills learned in scouting to augment a career in languages.
