News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
In an effort to acquire an identifying image, the newly formed Sisters Astronomy Club (SAC), which operates under Sisters Park & Recreation District (SPRD), is announcing a contest to design a club logo.
The image should depict natural features unique to the Sisters area; the name of the club - "Sisters Astronomy Club" - should appear on the logo; and the theme of the image should be consistent with the club's mission statement.
SAC's mission statement reads as follows: "The purpose of this club is to foster enthusiasm for and knowledge of astronomy with adults and children in the Sisters area, and to interact with other persons and organizations that share similar interests in astronomy."
The logo may be created digitally or drawn by hand. The contest is open to all who live in the Sisters community. Submit entries to Rima Givot at Sisters High School, 1700 W. McKinney Butte Rd., Sisters, OR 97759.
Digital images may be e-mailed to [email protected]
sisters.k12.or.us.
The contest will close at 3 p.m. on Thursday, May 5. Members of the SAC advisory committee will evaluate entries and their decision is final. Contest winner will be awarded a pair of high-quality 10x42 binoculars, courtesy of Kruger Optical of Sisters.
Sisters Astronomy Club (SAC) will start holding monthly meetings beginning in April, and all who have an interest in astronomy are invited to attend.
These meetings will take place on the first Thursday of every month, except in December. Adjustments may be made when the first Thursday falls on a major holiday.
The first gathering will take place at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 7, at SPRD's Coffield Center, 1750 W. McKinney Butte Rd. in Sisters. It will begin with a business meeting that may run 30 to 45 minutes, followed by an astronomy-related presentation lasting approximately an hour. All are welcome to attend both the business meeting and the presentation.
"The astronomy club was only recently formed by a local group of interested educators and amateur astronomers, and its ultimate success will depend on community involvement," said Sisters astronomer Ron Thorkildson. "If you have an interest in astronomy and wish to learn more, or if you have knowledge you wish to share with others, please consider attending these meetings."
SAC also stages the monthly Stars Over Sisters star watches at SPRD and the high school. Check dates and times in the announcements and events section of The Nugget.
