News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Folks in the Sisters Country can get a rare glimpse into the early life of a pair of golden eagle chicks by viewing the "eagle cam" through the Wolftree Web site, http://www.beoutside.org (click through to "Golden Eagle Cam").
The camera is set up on Forrest Babcock and Janet Zuelke's property overlooking Whychus Creek.
The golden eagle nest is on the rim of the canyon about 1/4 mile away.
Babcock set up the camera to view the nest through a 7-inch astronomical telescope.
It is best viewed in the morning before the heat of the day creates distortions.
"It's just right outside my house," he said.
"We're in the perfect position to look right into the nest." This is the second year the web cam has been set up to view the nesting pair of eagles, which commonly nest in rocks and cliffs.
The space for the nest is tight and Babcock said it may be difficult for both eaglets to survive as they grow larger.
Last year, one of a pair fell from the nest.
The camera has been set up for a couple of months as the mother eagle occupied the nest.
"We actually think we saw her laying the eggs on February 20-21," Babcock said.
The eggs hatched on April 1st and 3rd.
