News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The Lady Outlaws' tennis team completed six of eight matches to record the 5-1 win in their match at Bend High on Thursday, April 28.
Becky Thomas (No. 1 singles) and Amity Calvin (No. 2 singles) won their matches and Megan Minke (No. 3 singles) and Chloe Stein (No. 4 singles) were both leading in their matches before they were called due to snow.
Thomas beat Kendall Holiday in two sets with scores of 6-3, 6-1. Thomas' effective net play, deep, strong corner shots, and her consistent serving were key in the win.
Calvin's ace serves, baseline drives and some incredible overhead smashes led her to a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Angie Luchini.
Jen Houk and Elise Herron (No. 1 doubles) defeated Maddie Hendrich and Kamari Otto 6-4, 6-0. The duo's good ball placement and Herron's strong serves were consistent throughout the match. Houk and Herron also outplayed their opponents with great baseline drives.
Sisters' No. 3 doubles' team (Paige Tosello and Shelbi Thompson) also recorded a win on the day. Tosello and Thompson beat Danielle Bailey and Logan Kadelcik 4-6, 6-1, and 10-8 in the tiebreaker. The girls did a great job of setting up plays for each other and covered the court well.
Two days later, the Outlaws played in a round robin tournament against Mt. View, Cascade, and Madras at Black Butte Ranch. Each team played 55-minute matches against each other, for a total of six matches.
Amity Calvin (No. 3 singles), Chloe Stein (No. 4 singles), and the No. 4 doubles team of Haley Carlson and Savannah Spear highlighted the day for the Outlaws.
Calvin won two of her three matches and had 10 ace serves for the tournament.
"Amity's serving was fast and deep, and her opponents had trouble returning them," said Coach Marti Dale. "She played an aggressive game going to the net to finish the play and score the point."
Stein was on top of her game the entire tournament and won every set in all three of her matches.
"Chloe played a steady game with very few errors," said Dale. "She was consistent in her serves and her baseline drives and let her opponents make the mistakes."
JV players, freshmen Haley Carlson and Savannah Spear, stepped up and played at the No. 4 doubles spot in the varsity tournament and won two of their three matches.
"Both girls communicated with each other to cover the court," said Dale. "Their ball placement for the offensive shot was excellent and earned many points throughout their matches. Savannah scored points at the net and Haley's strong serving allowed the team to take control in two of the three
matches."
The Outlaws will play at home at Black Butte Ranch on Saturday, May 7, against Central, Hidden Valley, and Klamath Union. Districts will be held the following week at Black Butte Ranch on Thursday and Friday, May 12 and 13.
