Forest Service set for spring burning

Fuels specialists on the Sisters Ranger District have portions of several project areas scheduled for prescribed burning this spring. Burns will be conducted based on weather conditions.

All of the burns are expected to be low to moderate intensity underburns. Smoke from several of these projects will be visible to residents of Sisters, Black Butte Ranch, Camp Sherman or people traveling along Highway 20. These burns include:

• Leftover: Two units are planned for underburning in this project area that is located approximately eight miles northwest of Sisters near the junction of Highway 20 and Forest Service Road 14.

• Highway 20: This burn, located northwest of Sisters along Highway 20, is expected to be highly visible to residents and visitors traveling along Highway 20. Signs and flaggers will be available as needed to direct traffic along the highway.

• Metolius Basin: Approximately five underburns are planned in the Metolius Basin project area located 3-5 miles north of Highway 20 along Forest Service Road 12.

• McCache: Fuels specialists will continue working in this project area with numerous small underburns planned. Areas are located approximately 6-8 miles west/northwest of Sisters.
