News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The Outlaws tennis team defeated Klamath Union at home at Black Butte Ranch on Saturday, May 7. Sisters and Klamath Union each won four matches, but Sisters won the match based on the games won tie break, 71-56.
Ben Fullhart, at the No. 1 singles position, dished out powerful first serves and played an extraordinary all-court game to earn a decisive 6-2, 6-1 win over Kris Crawford.
Devon Calvin (No. 4 singles) won his match by default. Since Klamath wasn't able to field an opponent, No. 2 doubles player, Mitch Mirande, filled in to play against Calvin in a "playback match."
Calvin had an outstanding performance against Mirande and took the match 3-6, 6-3, and 10-8.
Coach Garth Tosello said, "It was a great match to watch. Devon had long point, great angle shots with angle volleys as the highlight, and a ripping forehand by Devon for the win."
Sisters' No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams also recorded wins for the day.
Colby Gilmore and Austin Williams (No. 1) lit up the court with their serves and shut out Mitch Mirande and Sam Patterson in two straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.
"Colby and Austin showed great teamwork, and their passing shots off the forehand side led to their dominant win," said Tosello.
Sam Quinn and Evan Rickards (No. 2) beat Ryan Rico and Matt Cole 6-4, 6-3. The duo scored points off their forehand shots and were tough to beat at the net.
Tosello was pleased with the progress his team has made since the start of the season.
"We started the season with many new players and finished strong at 6-3," said Tosello. "I'm very pleased with their efforts, and we hope to finish in the top three at Districts."
