News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Sisters will have a new source for fresh, local foodstuffs this summer. A new Sisters Farmer's Market will be operating each Friday starting June 10, from 3 to 7 p.m.
The market will cover a block of Ash Street between Main and Adams avenues. The Sisters City Council approved the closure of the street earlier this month.
"We're making it kind of a street fair kind of feeling," said Janet Zuelke, one of four founding committee members. The others are Jan McGowan, Bruce Berryhill and Rebecca Sokol.
"There's been a lot of people who have wanted (a farmer's market) in this town for a long time," Zuelke said. As the owner of Poppies Gourmet Garden Market & Café, Zuelke cheerfully acknowledges self-interest: "I want to be able to get this fresh food myself."
The committee is actively seeking vendors.
"We're looking for agriculture-based products - preferably produce that's local (defined as coming from within Oregon)," said Sokol. "We decided among us that one in 10 can be ag-based but non-food."
They're looking for growers, bakers, ranchers with natural beef or poultry products, cheesemakers, winemakers and the like.
The market will operate under the umbrella of the Sisters Park & Recreation District.
The official name of the market is Sisters Farmer's Market - Fresh on Fridays. Organizers hope it will boost the local economy and attract visitors who hit town on Friday, set for a weekend of activities. They plan to host live music, especially featuring musicians from school music programs, from the jazz band to Americana Project singer-songwriters.
Those interested in being a vendor or in playing music may contact Sokol at 541-408-7794. Vendor applications are available at http://www.sistersfarmersmarket.com.
