News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Outlaw Radio, KZSO 106.5 FMLP, is located just off the lobby in Sisters High School. An exploratory meeting is being planned to explore the possibility of moving the station to a more community-friendly location, revamping the programming focus, and making the station a true "public service" communication resource.
The first meeting will take place on Wednesday, June 8, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., at a downtown meeting location to be determined.
Current ideas include live broadcasting of the major Sisters events (Quilt Show, Sisters Rodeo, Americana Project and Sisters Folk Festival), remote wildfire updates, city council workshops and meetings, as well as tourist information and updates during the summer.
Since "going live" in 2005 the station has primarily been student-focused, playing a mix of country and classic rock music with an occasional "live remote" downtown or high school sports event.
New programming could include "special interest" shows hosted by local residents, regular local news reports, as well as a wider mix of music that appeals to all Sisters Country residents. Students will still be encouraged to participate in the expanded focus, learning the basics of radio broadcasting as well as the business of operating a community radio station.
In an effort to realize the original "community vision" of KZSO, Bill Mintiens is spearheading the effort to form the exploratory committee.
"The exploratory meeting is just that - exploratory. We need to find out if there is passion and energy behind this proposal. Attendance at the first meeting doesn't commit anyone, we just want resident input and ideas," said Mintiens.
Mintiens is asking interested people to contact him at 541-504-6696 or [email protected] for more information and the meeting location.
