News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
There's nothing as traditionally American as an old-fashioned Fourth of July picnic in the park.
For the second year, Sisters Habitat for Humanity will host just such a picnic at Creekside City Park, from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday, July 4. The event will be held in conjunction with the second annual Recycle Run (see related story, page 5). Registration for the run is from 7 to 8 a.m.
The event is a fundraiser for Sisters Habitat for Humanity. Sponsorships are still available through the "Be One of Us" campaign, which invites people to sponsor the event at a rate of $10. According to organizers, more than 100 people have signed on.
The picnic will include a silent auction, traditional food, a pie contest and old-fashioned games and activities.
"We'll have games for the kids, and they're 50 cents apiece," said organizer Cindy Rainey. "They're all the old, funky games from when you were a kid."
The games aren't just for the kids, though.
Rainey recalled that a group of women happened upon the picnic last year and were enticed to play the games and eat cotton candy. Pretty soon, it was as if they were kids again.
"Those ladies spent the whole afternoon at the park and they had the best time," Rainey said.
