News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
To the Editor:
I guess you had to fill some space in your June 29 edition and so used a paragraph written by someone named Jonathan J. Cooper of the Associated Press.
Are you sure he's legit, and not some Republican operative trying to put lipstick on a Republican pig? In Oregon, "Republicans," says Cooper, "have managed to frustrate Democrats and put a clear Republican imprint on public policy. They've expanded both online and traditional charter schools." One detail omitted is that numerous studies on Charter Schools clearly point out that they are not any better and often worse than public schools. Also, Religious Charter Schools cop tax payer funds to promote their religious messages under the guise of "education."
And of course Republicans are justly proud of their other "success" according to AP - Blocking a bill that would have banned a potentially harmful chemical from baby bottles. I'm sure Republicans are proud of letting bottle makers put babies at risk of chemical poisoning.
It's typical. In Congress they are doggedly fighting any effort at reforming Wall Street wretched excesses that brought down the world economy, and carrying water for the banks in killing the appointment of Elizabeth Warren, whose mission is to protect consumers from being gouged by credit card
companies.
Yep, those Republicans sure are fighting for us poor suckers by doing everything possible to enable the powerful to gain even more power than they already have. Like the conservatives on the Supreme Court whose motto seems to be, "In a fight between the Ninety-Seven Pound Weakling and Superman, 97 Pound Weakling shall have one arm tied behind his back, and Superman shall be allowed to use brass knuckles and a Taser."
Republicans consider such a contest a fair fight.
