Starry Nights band is a crowd-pleaser

One thing is a sure bet for those attending A Starry Summer Night fundraiser on Friday, August 12, at Aspen Lakes Golf Course: they will be entertained.

The 10-piece High Street Band is one of the most entertaining outfits around - from their colorful zoot suits to their eclectic mix of jazz, jump blues and pop, they'll keep the dance floor full.

In fact, they're a big reason A Starry Summer Night is what it is.

Band leader Matt Summers has family ties to the community through teacher and baseball coach Steve Hodges, whom Summers describes as his "best friend for 40 years and brother-in-law." At a baseball game last year, Summers was talking with Starry Nights organizer Jeri Fouts about the difficulties she was having bringing in artists for the traditional Starry Nights concert series held in the winter and spring. Artists donate their performances, and that was not working out too well in the face of an economic downturn that has hit the entertainment business hard.

Fouts told Summers that it looked like the concerts would have to be cancelled.

"She said, 'Unless we can get the High Street Band' - jokingly," Summers recalled.

But Summers thought it was something he and his bandmates could do, and the idea for a summertime show was born.

Summers said he recommended an outdoor venue with a dance floor because "that's our thing."

The first show was held last year, to rave reviews.

"It ended up being better than anybody thought. The Cyruses were awesome, and that setting..." he said. "Everybody said they had so much fun, that's one we'll do again."

So they are. Summers promises some fresh fun to liven the proceedings.

"We've got three very special guests,' he said. "They've all recorded national projects. It's gonna be over the top!"

The evening, which starts at 6:30 p.m., will include an opening set by the Sisters High School Jazz Combo, a barbecue dinner catered by Brand 33 Restaurant, dancing outside under the stars and a live and silent auction.

The Sisters Schools Foundation supports programs and activities at Sisters Elementary, Middle and High Schools.

Tickets are $50 in advance or $60 at the door. Tickets can be purchased at Metamorphosis Salon in Sisters, Leavitt's, or at Aspen Lakes Pro Shop. For tickets by phone call Aspen Lakes at 541-549-4653.
