News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon

Sisters folks get the word out on preparedness

It's all about neighbors helping neighbors get ready for trouble - whether that comes in the form of fire, flood, earthquake or personal emergency.

Local agencies from the City of Sisters to the Sisters fire department and the Red Cross have put together detailed plans for responses to all kinds of emergencies. Now a grass-roots group called Sisters Country: Prepared & Ready (SCPR) is working to make sure that local families have plans, too.

"We're focusing on being prepared so that we're not a burden to those (emergency services), so that we can take care of ourselves in a major disaster for a minimum of 72 hours," said SCPR member Cindy Rainey.

SCPR will be conducting door-to-door outreach on Saturday, August 20, to provide free materials for disaster preparedness kits and information on emergency preparedness.

As part of the effort, the Sisters-Camp Sherman Rural Fire Protection District will be out offering free smoke detectors (and installation).

Rainey said that she hopes to "inspire people to start to build their (emergency) kits."

The group is looking for volunteers to help with the August 20 outreach project, which will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. across Sisters Country.

"You don't need to train yourself; we'll train you on what to say," Rainey said.

She noted that the approach is a no-pressure one - with the bonus of giving away free stuff.

"This is the easiest door-to-door thing one could do," she said.

Rainey noted that the Sage Meadow homeowners association is taking on the project for their own neighborhood, a move that she applauds.

"If we could get more neighborhood associations to take it on themselves, that would be helpful too," she said.

There will be a volunteer orientation at 9 a.m. at the Sisters High School parking lot on August 20. For more information call Red Cross preparedness and outreach coordinator Lauren Woodward at 503-528-5657.
