News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Julia Alice Harrington passed peacefully from this earth on Tuesday, August 23, 2011 at 5 a.m. Family members were at her bedside for her very peaceful departure. Judy fought a brave battle after suffering a fall with complications ensuing. She is at peace and will be with her beloved husband, Donald Eugene Harrington, at Willamette National Cemetery on Mt. Scott in Portland, Oregon.
Judy has been a resident of Sisters for over 30 years.
Along with her husband, Don, and a joint effort by the rest of the family members, they built from scratch their Sisters Dream Home, over 2,500 square feet with the Three Sisters in their front living room.
She was known in the community and made many wonderful friends.
She was a volunteer at the Sisters Chamber of Commerce for many years, Habitat for Humanity, Red Cross, Sisters Jazz Festival, Cascade Music Festival and Heart Association volunteer.
She was also a great voice for the city of Sisters and an asset to the community that she loved.
She enjoyed acting as "tour guide" for visitors from out of town, informing them all about the mountains, rivers and lakes surrounding Sisters.
Visitors always marveled at her knowledge of the area she lived in.
Judy was an avid basketball fan and cheered for her favorite team, the Portland Trailblazers, and didn't miss watching a game. One of her favorite pastimes was keeping in touch via Skype and email with all her family and friends. She also enjoyed reading and in past years gardening and crafts.
Judy always loved to travel and would go at the drop of a hat. When her husband was alive they would travel the world, going to places she had only dreamed of: Australia, Malaysia, Europe, Hawaii and points beyond. Mom was always up for a road trip and enjoyed trips to visit her family in California, Oregon, Washington, Oklahoma and Michigan.
Judy took enormous joy in her family and was so proud when she had all her kids together. She is survived by five children: Pat Hallman and husband Ron, Dennis Harrington, Carole Curtis, Luanne Harrington and Don T. Harrington. She also has nine grandchildren: Brad (Jordis) Hallman, Tricia Hallman, Conner Harrington, Kyle Harrington, Matt Curtis, Jennifer Curtis, Chris Curtis, Stacey (Scott) Schueble and Nikki Harrington. Judy also leaves three great-grandchildren: Deidre Hallman, Caitlyn Hallman and Ashton Prince-Curtis.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Julia Harrington Memorial Fund at the Bank of the Cascades, 272 E. Main Ave., Sisters, OR 97759, Veterans of Foreign Wars, http://www.vfw.org, or the American Heart Association, http://www.heart.org.
