News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The Outlaws football team lost 7-0 on the road in their season opener at Junction City (JC) on Friday, September 30.
Junction City scored on a three-yard run in the third quarter to gain a 7-0 advantage over the Outlaws.
Although Sisters lost the contest, Coach Clyde Powell told The Nugget that the Outlaws' defense played "lights-out football."
"The defense held Junction City to 17 yards of total offense in the fourth quarter," stated Powell. "In the second quarter we had a great goal-line stand. At first and goal on the four-yard line we stopped
them."
Powell had praise for his defensive coach, Gary Hedin, and said that Hedin has done a great job of getting the Outlaws' defense ready for league play.
"You have to be very disciplined to defend against them (JC)," said Powell. "They run a lot of motion, and our defense did a great job defending their offense."
Powell admitted that Sisters struggled on the offensive side of the ball.
"It comes down to a matter of getting consistency," said Powell. "We'd have a good play and then we'd have a bad play. We just need to continue to get better. In reality, we need to get the same kids on the field, and that hasn't happened. We haven't had the same offensive starters on the field in the last three
games."
Only three seniors (Shane Groth, Bryce Alderman and Connor Morgan) were on the field the entire night, but according to Powell all three had stellar performances.
"Shane (Groth) was involved in 15 tackles, and five of those were for losses," said Powell. "That's a pretty impressive game for a linebacker. Bryce was involved in several key tackles and provided good leadership, and Connor led the secondary and gave up only 56 yards passing."
On Friday, October 7, the Outlaws will play at home against Elmira in a 7 p.m. game. Sisters is 0-1 in league and 0-5 overall.
