News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show has issued a call for entries in the second-annual Small Wonders Challenge.
Colorful quilts big enough to be seen a block away are a staple of the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show. This year the show started a new tradition: Small quilts, made with big talent and creativity. The response of entrants and the public was universally positive. More than 80 quilts were entered, enthusiastic visitors flocked to the displays, and proceeds from the sales of these Small Wonders directly benefited the Sisters community.
Building on the success of 2011, the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show is announcing the call for entries for the 2012 Small Wonders Challenge. Rules of entry can be found at www.
sistersoutdoorquiltshow.org/contests.htm. Judging categories will include Best Use of Color, Best Use of the 2012 Show Theme ("A Patterned Village"), Best Contemporary or Abstract Quilt, Judges' Choice, and Viewers' Choice. Five $100 prizes will be donated by Stitchin' Post as major sponsor.
The quilts will be on display during the 2012 Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show and sold at that time with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Malone Scholarship, which funds all of the after-school program scholarships of the Sisters Park & Recreation District (SPRD), which in turn supports the community schools program. The scholarship also supports SPRD's early childhood preschool program, and the youth enrichment programs, including youth sports for K-6th grade, arts, music, and various other programs.
Anne Heath, SPRD's district business manager, provides an inspiring example:
"The Malone Scholarship has helped one young man from a single-parent household, struggling to get by, who is often on his own while his dad is away working. He was able to take part in every week of summer camp, play soccer and wrestling; he is at the rec center every day after school, and on all non-school days. SPRD is doing everything possible to help this young man, and his life is better because of the Malone Fund and the community that is working together on his behalf."
