News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The Outlaws football team lost 39-19 to the Huskies at Sweet Home on Friday, October 28, in the final league game of the season.
Coach Clyde Powell said, "It kind of felt like the Spartans at Thermopylae. We were good soldiers but just got overwhelmed."
Weather conditions were relentless and teams played in a downpour.
"The rain was so bad that when I got the scorebooks at the end of the game, they either fell apart or pages were literally stuck together," Powell said ruefully. "Hopefully, the stats are correct."
Sisters capped a 60-yard drive with a three-yard run by Ethan Luloff for their lone touchdown of the first half. Isaac Jackson's kick for the PAT was good.
Sweet Home scored two touchdowns in the second quarter that devastated the Outlaws. The first was an 83-yard kickoff return and the second was a 76-yard touchdown run. At the half the Huskies held a 30-7 lead.
Sisters scored their last touchdown on a 24-yard pass from Shane Groth to Connor Morgan. Morgan was the alternate receiver on the option pass and caught the ball on the left side. Connor broke clear across the secondary and ran it into the right-hand corner of the end zone for the touchdown.
The Huskies scored their last nine points of the game in the third quarter.
Powell said, "Considering the circumstances, the kids turned in a good performance. There was no quit in them. They had to deal with adverse rainy weather conditions for the first time this year and then there was pressure due to play-off implications. I think our young kids handled the situation well.
"One remarkable thing about the game was that even though the score was lopsided at the half, we had 122 yards rushing and they had 124 yards rushing," added Powell. "I think that speaks to how our kids were really playing."
Ethan Luloff racked up 127 yards rushing.
The Outlaws will play at Central on Friday, November 4, in a play-in game.
