News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The boys soccer team shut out the Huskies 5-0 at Sweet home October 25, and two days later wrapped up league play with a 1-1 tie at home against Elmira. Sisters finished 6-1-1 and were crowned Sky-Em league champs for the second year in a row.
The Outlaws got off to a slow start against the Sweet Home Huskies on Tuesday. Gabe Reitmann got Sisters on the scoreboard in the 35th minute when he scored off a follow-up shot. One minute later Robert Small knocked one in and at the half Sisters held a 2-0 lead.
In the second half, the Outlaws scored in the 50th, 60th and 70th minutes. Evan Rickards scored off a Robert Small assist, and then again off a direct kick from 45 yards out. The Huskies keeper was too far out, and Evan placed it perfectly just under the cross bar. Jake McAllister beat three defenders to score the final goal.
In Thursday's game against the Falcons, Sisters' goal came with 10 minutes left on the clock. Evan Rickards crossed a corner to Nicky Blumm, who headed the ball in for the goal.
Elmira answered two minutes later when a handball was called in the box against Ryan Long and the Falcons scored on the penalty kick.
Sisters out-shot Elmira 40-6.
Coach Rob Jensen told The Nugget that Elmira's game plan was to pack everyone back on defense, put one player forward and then boot the ball to that player.
"We dropped back another midfield and tried to spread them out," said Jensen. "It seemed like it was starting to work, however we took a lot of shots from outside the 18. We had some good looks and close shots that just didn't go in for us. Sometimes the plan just doesn't work."
Jensen added, "We played good against Elmira, but had trouble breaking through the packed-in defense. Nicky (Blumm) had a really good game and made big plays for us and Gabe (Reitmann) played with a lot of
energy."
Senior Sebastian Boehm commented on the team's journey to the top: "We improved every practice, we kept our grades up and we stayed out of trouble because obviously last year that ruined us. I give big kudos to our goalie, Drew Corrigan, for his athleticism in the goalie box. He made a lot of critical saves for us. Our bench players improved as well, and that was a big help to our success."
The Outlaws will play at home against Central on Thursday, November 3.
