News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon

Artists' work on display at Sisters Library

Jan Sims, founder of Hero Quilters, participated in a nationwide quilt group that wanted to do something for soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. She heard about American Hero Quilts, out of Vashon, Washington, a non-profit making patriotic quilts for returning severely injured soldierswho were triaged through Madigan Army Hospital.

Jan immediately stepped up to the challenge to help and ran an ad in The Nugget soliciting quilters to answer the call. Consequently, Hero Quilters of Sisters was born in January of 2007. As a result, Sisters quilters have been sending Hero Quilts to Madigan Army Hospital for five years.

Many of the women in the Sisters group have husbands who served in the military, and one woman's son is on his fourth tour in Iraq/Afganistan.

The current display of Hero Quilts at the Sisters Library is to honor veterans during the month of November.

Justine Gibb's "found object art" pieces are on display in the Sisters Library foyer.

"I believe we're all artists at heart," says the folk artist of Natural Selection Design in Redmond. "The differences apply to how we express our creativity. I've always enjoyed drawing and sculpting. I'm fascinated by different techniques and love to try new things. I also enjoy exploring how different cultures share their creativity, and for this reason, folk art has long held an attraction for me."

Renowned Sisters watercolorist Don Zylius will display his work through November in the community room of the Sisters Library as part of the monthly art exhibit put on by the Friends of the Sisters Library.
