News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The Camp Sherman Hasty Team, an all-volunteer search and rescue group, is gearing up to host several months of specialized training called the SAR Basic Academy.
Run by Deschutes County search and rescue, the training begins in January and consists of 140 hours of both classroom and field work. Course work covers all aspects of search and rescue, from basic map and compass skills to understanding how a search base is set up. The academy concludes in the late spring with an overnight survival field test which participants must pass in order to become certified.
Jefferson County deputy Dave Blann is one of the key team members and said that they are looking for outdoor people with a skill-set in place and a readiness to serve. Anyone from Camp Sherman, Black Butte or Sisters is welcome to apply. Most training takes place in Camp Sherman, though some sessions may occur in Sisters.
The fact that Camp Sherman is in Jefferson County is immaterial to Blann. "Deschutes, Jefferson and Linn Counties all meet in our area," he said. "We don't worry about jurisdiction until a find occurs."
In fact, in the past year, the Hasty Team has been part of searches in at least five other counties around the state. Requests for SAR help occur at least monthly, said Blann. Called the Hasty Team because of their quick response time, the group members keep their packs ready by the door, prepared to head out at short notice any time their expertise is needed.
Instructors for the course include several active members of the team. Matt Adams, Kirk Metzger, Jay Crawford, Ron Berry and Blann have many years of experience in basic SAR technique and in specialties such as swift-water rescue.
Blann said that after members complete the basic certification, they are welcome to pursue further training in their specialty.
"It is a vehicle to use and enhance current skills," he said. Several members of the Hasty Team use horses in their search work.
Team members must re-certify yearly and will do so during the SAR Academy. This creates a good opportunity for prospective and current members to meet and work together.
Volunteering for search and rescue is a big commitment, said Blann. It helps to have the support of family and one's employer. He's looking for several more people who are comfortable in the outdoors and posses the time and willingness to serve the public.
Background checks are run on all applicants. Deadline is December 15 and applications may be found online at www.campshermanhastyteam.com, by emailing [email protected]
