News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The annual holiday food drives are underway in Sisters, and the Sisters Kiwanis Club is encouraging those in need to apply for the Kiwanis Holiday Food Share program.
The program offers a Christmas dinner with all the trimmings, along with pet food for family companions provided through the Furry Friends Pet Food Drive.
Kiwanis member David Hiller reports that there was an influx of applications last week and the program is in need of donations to meet the need. "We're not as flush as we were last year," he said. Cash donations are the most efficient means to contribute, allowing Kiwanis to target purchases and purchase in bulk, and thus getting more bang for the buck.
"For the dollar value that they spend, we can actually buy more food if they give cash," Hiller said.
To donate cash, mail checks to the Kiwanis Food Share Program at P.O. Box 1296, Sisters, Oregon 97759. Call Naomi Rowe at 541-549-5694 if you have any further questions.
The application deadline for the program is December 18. Applications are available at FAN, Sisters Fire Hall and at the Kiwanis House on the corner of Main Avenue and Oak Street.
The Sisters High School Key Club is launching its annual food drive this week. It runs through December 16.
All non-perishable food items can be dropped off at the front office of the High School.
"The Key Club is running the food drive as a class competition to encourage all students to get out and gather food items," said adviser Michele Hammer. "Last year during the same two-week period the school gathered two tons of food."
