'Harry & Lola' entertain holiday crowd at BBR

Jean and Claude Nave have been owners of Scottish terriers for 25 years. After the loss of their last Scottie in 2010, the Naves discovered Aberdeen Scottish Terrier Rescue. Impressed with and understanding the needs of the organization led Jean to begin writing a series of children's books starring the two rescued dogs the Naves adopted, Harry and Lola.

Nave and co-writer Vicki Spandel read the newest in the series, "Harry and Lola meet Santa Paws," to a large audience of children and adults on Christmas Eve at The Lodge at Black Butte Ranch.

"My friend Vicki Spandel joined me in writing the book," said Jean. "Vicki is a great writer. She teaches teachers how to teach writing, and her skills really took the Harry and Lola series to a higher level."

Spandel, a Sisters resident, has been a language arts teacher, editor, and journalist. She has authored or co-authored more than 40 books for teachers and students, and is currently working on several picture books, including one for the Harry and Lola series.

Nave moved to Central Oregon 20 years ago, when she and her husband Claude retired from their careers in the corporate world. She later became involved as a founder and president of the Sisters Country Historical Society. She is still involved with the society, as well as being a board member of the Aberdeen Scottish Terrier Rescue. She turned the experience into the "Harry and Lola" series of e-books.

Nave's objective has been to sell enough of the Harry and Lola series e-books to get on Amazon.com's December e-books for kids best-seller list.

This latest effort includes 24 colorful illustrations that help tell the story of Harry and Lola and their meeting with Santa Paws. Once one of Santa's helpers, Santa Paws now takes food and treats to dogs in need all over the world for Christmas. Harry and Lola are enlisted as helpers for this Christmas Eve adventure and assist Santa Paws with helping the many dogs in need throughout the world.

"Once you read the book," said Nave, "you will see why I'm excited about this great story and it's message of helping dogs in need at Christmastime. Kids enjoy the story and love the idea of helping Santa Paws help dogs in need."

The book ends with children invited to become part of the Santa Paws team of helpers by making any size or type of contribution to any dog rescue organization. Once they have done that they can email Harry and Lola to receive an official personalized poster showing that they are part of the Santa Paws team.

Even though the books at this time are all e-books, you don't need to own a Kindle or other book reader to be able to read the books.

Amazon.com offers free software downloads that run on the Kindle, your PC, Mac, phone, or tablet. All of the books in the series are available at http://www.amazon.com and at http://www.barnesand

noble.com.

"Harry and Lola Meet Santa Paws" is priced at $1.99 and all author's royalties go to the Aberdeen Scottish Terrier Rescue.

For children young and old who would like to be a part of the Santa Paws team and receive a personalized poster, you can email Harry and Lola at [email protected]
