News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
To the Editor:
As I listened on TV the other night about the young American scientist who, "just to see if he could do it" (actual quote!), created a flu virus so deadly that it would kill 60 percent of any people contracting it, all I could think was that if he was an Iraqi, an Iranian, an Afghani or other than an American, CIA would be dedicated to his extinction! Instead, what did we do? We ordered two or three of his "critical pages" to be deleted!
I seem to recall that it was a frustrated (Pakistani) atomic scientist who sold his vital A-bomb knowledge (whether to Iran or Korea, can't remember which) and he is still alive - and richer! What will this American scientist do if he becomes similarly frustrated or greedy - to what nation will he try to sell his deadly formula?
Isn't it frightening to realize what monsters live and walk among us? And yet, is it any different or less frightening to think that we have 500 men and women in Washington who, just as uncaring (or to prove they can do it) are toying with our economic lives! Are they any less dangerous? Maybe CIA or some agency should be charged with doing something about them!
Voters arise!
