Dance academy opening new studio

Sisters is dancing into 2012, with the addition of a new 2,000-square-foot studio in Outlaw Station, right next to Top Pin Archery.

The new facility will be home to the growing Sisters Dance Academy. Lonnie Liddell, owner and artistic director of Sisters Dance Academy, plans to offer a slate of new classes for children and adults.

The facility features two separate dance studios with hardwood floors.

"Our floors are a huge feature, because we have a sprung floor," Liddell told The Nugget.

A sprung floor is a boon to dancers; the "give" in the floor reduces wear and tear and the chance of injury to dancers.

The academy opened in February 2009, and demand has grown steadily. Operating in rented space limited the number of classes and the times they could be held. Now, Sisters Dance Academy is expanding its offerings.

There will be cardio hip hop, jazz, adult contemporary, adult ballet, country line dancing and social dancing. For children, they are offering more tot classes and new classes for teens and pre-teens, including a musical theatre dance class.

All the new classes mean adding new teachers: Shannon Abero and Kayla Williams will be joining the academy, bringing extensive dance and teaching background with them.

The Sisters Dance Academy Scholarship was established in the fall of 2011 by an anonymous donor inspired by her passion for the arts and desire for more children to be able to take part in the dance program. Downloadable applications are available at

www.sistersdanceacademy.com, along with a schedule of classes.

Sisters Dance Academy will host a grand opening on Saturday, January 14. There will be an open house throughout the day featuring a sampler of the classes available. The event will culminate in a free family dance party from 6 to 7 p.m., a free swing class from 7 to 7:45 p.m. and an open dance for adults from 7:45 to 8:45 p.m.
