Veterans honor scout color guard

Scouts from Boy Scout Troop 139 in Sisters have received Certificates of Appreciation from local veterans groups for their assistance during the Veteran's Day celebrations at Sisters schools last November.

The color guard opened and closed the events with the posting and retrieval of the American flag.

Troop 139 Color Guard members Garret Trahern, Andrew Stengel, Daniel Hunt, Shawn McClellan, Ethan Stengel, Taylor Lucas and Mike McClellan were presented the certificates by Lance Trowbridge, of the Sisters American Legion post, and Art Buell, of the Sisters Veterans of Foreign Wars.

The color guard is responsible for the presentation of the American flag as well as the state and scout flags in accordance with their proper etiquette and traditions. The color guard consists of a leader, flag bearers and honor guard.

At an event such as a Veteran's Day celebration, the color guard will open and close the proceedings. To begin the event the color guard leader comes to the front and asks the attendees to rise. He'll then direct the flag bearers to bring the flags to the front for posting. They salute the flag, and then the leader directs the attendees in reciting the pledge of allegiance. The leader then directs the color guard to the rear. The process is reversed to close the proceedings.

Etiquette regarding the American flag is set by federal law. Chapter 1 of Title 4 in the United States Code, commonly known as "The Flag Code," describes all rules and regulations concerning the United States flag.
