News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
To the Editor:
For the past five years, every fall I have been reading articles in this newspaper about how well the volleyball team is doing. Things like "Volleyball team takes first in tournament," "Volleyball first in league." I even remember reading "Volleyball team state champions," TWICE. Sounds like those athletes are lucky to have such a great coach. According to the school statistics, this coach has the winningest record for the Sisters High School volleyball program, ever.
For the past two years, every fall I have been reading articles in this newspaper about how well the girls soccer team is doing. Things like "Girls soccer team wins game number 11 in a row," "Girls soccer team number 1 in league." I even remember reading "Girls soccer team playing for state title," TWICE. Sounds like those athletes are lucky to have such a great coach. According to school statistics, this coach has the winningest record for the Sisters High School girls soccer program, ever. I even read in several newspapers that the girls soccer coach was awarded "Girls Soccer Coach of the Year." Congratulations!
Now fall sports are over and those coaches can take a well-earned rest until next year. Oh, wait! I just heard that the school district has fired both of them. What? I didn't read anywhere that these coaches were crooks, convicts or sex offenders, so that can't be the reason. I would sure like to know why, but even more important to me is I would like someone to explain to those returning athletes for next year why they won't be given the opportunity to be coached by (according to statistics) the best two coaches Sisters High School has ever had.
