News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The producer of the musical "1776" is looking to make a revolutionary contribution to the performing arts in Central Oregon. David Simpson, president of Shore Thing Productions, is presenting "1776" in concert this summer.
Simpson explained that the plot line for the musical focuses on the American Revolutionary War period and the heated debates among the members of the Second Continental Congress that led up to the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The cast of characters for the show includes all the usual suspects: Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, John Hancock, John Adams, and many, many of the others who have been designated "founders" of our country.
What makes this depiction of the birth of our country so unique, is that all of the characters are to be portrayed by women - 25 women! This creates a special challenge for Simpson and his production team. Not only will it be necessary to cast such a large number of women, but all must be able to harmonize.
With music and lyrics by Sherman Edwards, "1776" premiered on Broadway in 1969. The story is based, in part, on the actual writings of those portrayed in the play; and focuses particularly on the efforts of John Adams to persuade the Congress to adopt the Declaration of Independence.
The production team is hoping to draw from all of Central Oregon. The director, Kymberli Colbourne, is from Crooked River Ranch; the musical director is Tim Russell of Redmond; and Simpson himself lives at Eagle Crest and has numerous ties to Sisters.
"Knowing the immense pool of musical talent residing in and around Sisters, I'm particularly hopeful that we can recruit a sizable number of Sisters women to try out for the various parts, as all roles are open to those teen-aged and older."
Colbourne, who is directing the production, is a professional actor, singer, and voice-over artist. She has worked with theatrical companies all across the country, including the National Theatre of the Deaf, the Seattle Shakespeare Festival, Seattle Children's Theatre, and the Oregon Cabaret Theatre in Ashland.
The musical director, Tim Russell, served as choir director of Centennial High School for more than 20 years and is currently a member of the Central Oregon Mastersingers. He has sung with the Bach Festival Choir in Eugene, is a founding member of the Male Ensemble Northwest, and was the musical director for Cascade Theatrical Company's recent production of "Oliver."
"I am so pleased to have such a talented team to help me present this wonderful production," said Simpson. "Now all we need is a cast. I hope to see many of my friends from Sisters at our auditions."
Auditions will be held on Tuesday, February 21 and Wednesday, February 22, from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Pinckney Center for the Performing Arts at Central Oregon Community College. The show itself will be presented with a full orchestra, on Friday, June 29, Saturday, June 30 and Sunday, July 1.
Those auditioning are asked to bring their own sheet music and be prepared to sing 32 bars of a song of their own choosing. All singers must be able to harmonize. A piano accompanist will be provided, and scenes from the script will also be provided for readings at the audition. The production is being presented as a benefit for The Tower Theatre Foundation.
