Sisters salutes...

• Sebastian Nelson "Robin Hooded" an arrow during a shoot at Top Pin last week. Robin-Hooding is when the archer strikes the center of the target with one arrow, then hits that arrow squarely with another. In days of yore, the arrow would split. Nowadays, the carbon or aluminum shafts get stuck together.

• Cal Allen and Bob Collins of Sisters Science Club:

We wish to thank all of those who volunteered and worked to make the inaugural Sisters Science Symposium such a fine event. Special thanks go to the science teachers and their students for displaying and explaining the classroom science projects. Everyone was well informed and the enthusiasm was contagious. An extra nod of appreciation goes to Kristy Rawls and those students who set up and cleaned up the fair, and to Rob Corrigan for the entertaining and very competitive DCC contest in the gym. The school administration and maintenance staff were always cooperative and accommodating to our requests for assistance and equipment.

Dr. Beverly Torok-Storb and husband Dr. Rainier Storb took time from their busy schedules to deliver an interesting and easily understood lecture on the promise and challenges for the future of stem cell research and treatments. We are grateful to St. Charles Health Systems and the Kiwanis Club of Sisters for being sponsors of this event. Their financial help is deeply appreciated. We could not have put on the symposium without the tireless help of over 70 volunteers from the Science Club, Kiwanis and the community. Thank you all.

• Congratulations to Team Mambo - Nicky Blumm and Jardon Weems - for winning the Design, Construct Compete challenge and $300 first-prize at last weekend's Sisters Science Symposium. Team Ben Larson and Team Sydoo (Autumn Saunders, Sydney Stoneback, Zach Valoppi and Ross Robinson) battled fiercely for the second-place slot. The trial came down to a measure-off, which Team Ben Larson won. A generous member of the audience kicked in $75 so that the prizes for second and third were both $150, in honor of the evenly contested match.

• Lois and Tom Worcester offer a Sisters salute to...

The management and staff at Hoodoo. What a good neighbor! They deserve much credit for the Wounded Warrior program, their work with Oregon Adaptive Sports, and just a general attitude of friendly helpfulness.

From this pair of very senior skiers, who make regular trips to the mountain, we offer special thanks to the lift operators who often slow the lift to make it easier for us to get on. Sometimes it is just the little things that help set Hoodoo apart from the many other ski areas we have visited over the 67 years we have enjoyed the sport.
