Baseball team loses two

The Outlaws baseball team fell 2-0 to Madras on Friday, March 19, and a week earlier lost 6-3 at Summit in their first game of the year.

Sisters out-hit the White Buffaloes 4-3 in Friday's game but unfortunately couldn't string any of their hits together. Madras got both their runs in the sixth inning.

Joey Morgan pitched well for the Outlaws the first five innings and only allowed one hit. Jarden Weems came in as relief in the final inning.

Nicky Blumm went 2/3 at the plate. Shane Groth was 1/3 and Ryan Pollard was 1/2.

A week earlier, on Friday, March 16, the Outlaws lost by three runs against Summit.

At the end of the fourth inning Sisters held a 3-2 lead. Shane Groth pitched the first four innings and then Coach Steve Hodges pulled him because of the weather. It was very cold and rainy and Hodges told The Nugget he didn't want Groth to suffer with a sore arm or injury.

Eli Boettner came in and finished up the pitching duties for the Outlaws. Summit scored four runs in the fifth to take a 6-2 lead, and that score held through the seventh inning.

Bryce Alderman had two hits in the game and Sam Calarco and Jardon Weems each had one. Freshman Justin Harrer also got a hit, his first at the varsity level.

Hodges said, "I was pleased with our hitting in the first half of the game, and then we went a little bit quiet. Shane was dominant for us on the mound and had decent control for his first outing considering the weather conditions.

"We have a lot of fresh faces on the team this year and we're finding out where people belong, and we're getting the guys experience," added Hodges.

The Outlaws headed to Arizona on Wednesday, March 22 to compete in the 24-team Salt River Baseball Classic Tournament in Scottsdale over spring break.
