Boys tennis squad tallies win in first match of the season

The boys tennis team earned a 7-1 win over Crook County on Thursday, March 22, in their first match of the season despite the fact they'd only been able to squeeze in a few practices due to unpredictable weather. A day later the Outlaws lost 8-0 to a talented Redmond squad.

In Thursday's match, Tyrell Gilmore and Jake Miller (No. 2 doubles) beat Lucas Rotta and Geoff Gerdes in a close-fought match that came down to a tiebreak. Final scores were 6-4, 7-6 (7-2 tiebreak). Both teams attacked the net for great volley points and Coach Garth Tosello stated that the duo's placement of their volleys and their ground strokes were key to the win.

Paul Fullhart (No. 1 singles) was in complete control of his match and walked away with a decisive 6-1, 6-1 victory over Oliver Peterson.

Luke Gnos (No. 2 singles) defeated Brick Woodward 6-3, 6-3 for a win. Gnos pulled away in both sets when the score got close. Tosello told The Nugget that Luke's pace on the ball gave him an advantage.

Devon Calvin (No. 3 singles) recorded a 6-0, 6-2 win over Ory Folts.

"Overall, for our first match of the season on a very cold day, and with limited warmup, the team pushed through for an encouraging win," said Tosello.

A day later, the Outlaws lost 8-0 to a tough Redmond team.

In No. 2 singles play, Devon Calvin dropped his first set to Miguel Hidalgo but changed his strategy and came back to play a close second set. Calvin consistently hit Hidalgo's backhand to end the second

set 4-6.

Tosello stated that Paul Fullhart (No. 1 singles) played well against Carlo Gongan and that long rallies and big serves highlighted the match. Fullhart lost

2-6, 2-6.

The Outlaws will hit the courts again after spring break.
