Boys tennis earns win over Cascade

The boys tennis team recorded a 5-3 victory over Cascade on Friday, April 6, and a day later took second place at the Madras High White Buffalo Invitational.

Sisters' top three singles all earned a first-place finish against Cascade on Friday.

Paul Fullhart (No. 1 singles) dominated play against Truman Clark in a 6-2, 6-3 victory. Luke Gnos, in the No. 2 spot, was also at the top of his game and sailed to a 6-2, 6-0 win over Kyle Schaeffer. Devon Calvin (No. 3) stayed ahead of Caleb Wood and recorded the win with scores of 6-2, 6-0.

"All three of these guys won by playing well in both ground strokes and net play," stated Coach Garth Tosello.

Evan Rickards and Ryan Houston (No. 1 doubles) beat Ryan Welty and Jonnu Netland 6-3, 6-0.

Ethan Stengel and Jared Kaping are new players to the Outlaws' squad and earned their first win as a team. The duo (No. 4 doubles) earned a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Josh Wood and Alex Cowan.

Jake Miller and Nathan Kaping (No. 3 doubles) played a hard-fought match that went three sets. Final scores were 5-7, 6-2 and 3-6.

"Scrambling net play and passing shots were all part of a close first set," said Tosello. "They easily won the second set but dropped the third."

Of the team's overall performance, Tosello said, "It was a great win for the team. They did...well on a cold day."

On Saturday, the Outlaws traveled to Madras to participate in the White Buffalo Invitational.

Girls tennis takes on Redmond

The Lady Outlaws tennis players lost 1-7 to a tough Redmond team in their first match of the season on Friday, April 6.

Sisters' No. 1 doubles duo, Elise Herron and Jen Houck recorded the Outlaws only win in the match. Herron and Houck's consistent and aggressive play were crucial in their 7-5, 6-3 win over Courtney Wellette and Claire Wright.

"Elise and Jen communicated very well," said Coach Marti Dale. "They moved together to cover the court and anticipated the shots."

The Outlaws were missing their No. 1 and No. 2 singles players (Becky Thomas and Hannah Stuwe) and Chloe Stein and Anna Peasley stepped up and filled those spots.

Stein lost in a very close match to Jenessa Haugen. Chloe lost 3-6 in the first set but battled back for a 6-3 win in the second set. The match came down to a tight tie -break with Stein losing 8-10.

Dale said, "Chloe played exceptional. She moved her opponent around by varying her shots and she had really hard and consistent serves. It's the kind of loss you still feel really good about how well she played."

Overall, Dale was pleased with her team's first performance and told The Nugget the Outlaws will continue to improve each match.

Sisters will play against Madras at home at Black Butte Ranch on Thursday, April 12. The No. 1 and No. 2 singles and doubles players will participate in the Madras Invitational on Saturday, April 14.
