Boy Scouts work to restore forest site

Troop 139 recently conducted a restoration project in the Whychus Creek Wild and Scenic Area.

Last week, the Forest Service ripped up the old 900 Road and campsite as part of the restoration. The troop then provided manual labor consisting of seeding, planting trees and native brush, removing fire rings, picking up garbage, moving rocks, covering up the old roadbed, installing signs and construction of a few connector trails to bypass the area.

The 12 scouts and five adults performed the work April 27-29, totaling over 200 hours of labor.

The restoration is part of the recently approved Whychus Creek Portal project, which is intended to reduce user damage to the area. The Sisters Trails Alliance is assisting the Forest Service in the Whychus Creek Portal project, and provided guidance for the scouts.
