Students plant trees for Arbor Day

Creekside Park along Whychus Creek has 10 new aspen trees thanks to the efforts of Kathy Few's third-grade class from Sisters Elementary School.

The students gathered at the park on Thursday, April 26, to mark Arbor Day.

Urban forester Katie Lompa noted that the city of Sisters has been designated a Tree City USA for the past five years. To maintain that designation, the city must sponsor an Arbor Day celebration each year.

"You guys are helping the city to keep its status," Lompa told the students. "You guys are actually going to be able to come here in the days to come and the years to come and see your trees. How neat is that?"

The students thought it was pretty neat. Even neater was the opportunity to dig in and get their hands dirty actually planting the trees, which they did under the supervision of volunteers from the city staff.

The trees were donated by Bruce Ronglien of Sisters and transported to the site by Gary Frazee.
