News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The girls lacrosse team wrapped up their season with a convincing 18-11 win over Crescent Valley High School in Corvallis on Tuesday, May 1. Three days earlier Sisters beat South Eugene 5-4 in a morning game and then in the afternoon lost 8-11 to Bend United.
In Tuesday's game against Crescent Valley teams played down, nine-on-nine, because Crescent Valley was short players.
It was a tough start for the Outlaws' defense. CV scored two goals in the first four minutes of play and took a quick 2-0 lead. Sisters settled their nerves and focused in on the task at hand. From there, the Outlaws played as a unit, communicated well and went on to record a decisive win.
Several players contributed to the Outlaws' scoring effort. Maison Morgan scored two goals in the first half and three in the second half to lead the Outlaws with five goals. Center Jordyn Clymens scored four goals, one of which came when Sisters was playing a man down in the second half due to a yellow card being issued for dangerous propelling.
Harley Bowler, at midfield, scored three goals, and Langley Vogt, at home attack, scored two. Riley Barrett and Sierra Slaughter both scored a goal in the second half.
Nikki Olson stopped 12 shots on goal.
"The second half of the game we managed to control 80 percent at the draw which really helped our ability to move the ball down the field," said Coach Michele Hammer.
Three days earlier, on Saturday the Outlaws matched up against South Eugene and tallied a 5-4 victory.
It was a well-matched contest and at the half Sisters held a 3-2 lead. Sisters tacked on two more goals in the second half and recorded the win.
Clymens scored two goals and Morgan, Vogt and Slaughter each scored one. Olsen blocked nine shots on goal.
"Our home defense of Randi Anderson, Corie Rodgers and Tiffany Cormalis did a great job of defending our goal with support from mid-defenders Riley Barrett and Breanna Perry," stated Hammer. "Offensive players, Langley Vogt, Maison Morgan, Sierra Slaughter and Harley Bowler were fantastic at offense."
Sisters faced Bend United Saturday afternoon and lost the contest by three. Teams played with nine on each side due to the fact that some of Sisters' players were in the afternoon production of Peter Pan.
Morgan was top scorer in the game with four goals, with three coming in the second half. Barrett, at mid-attack, scored two. Clymens and Bowler also score a goal, assisted by Vogt.
"We again had a strong defensive performance from Rodgers and Cormalis at home defense," said Hammer. "Perry and Bowler, at mid-defender, were great at covering the 12-meter fan."
The Outlaws finished strong and the future looks bright for girls lacrosse.
"It was great to end the season with a couple of wins," stated Hammer. "While we lose seniors Jordyn Clymens, Randi Anderson and injured Morgan Duvenick, there is a very strong, talented foundation to build a viable and competitive team for the 2013 season. We are starting to see the results of the youth lacrosse program bringing players up through the system. We had two players who had played in middle school last year and there are three eighth-grade players currently playing at the middle school program.
"It's been a tough season playing with a small team that had injuries and school conflicts but I saw some amazing talent and dedication from players who will hopefully be back next year for another great year," added Hammer.
