Outlaws finish league on winning note

The boys baseball team shut out La Pine 15-0 on Tuesday, May 8, and three days later beat Cottage Grove at home 6-2 to wrap up league play with a flawless 15-0 record.

Jarden Weems pitched a no-hitter in five innings at La Pine on Tuesday. Weems recorded seven strike-outs and walked only one batter.

Sam Calarco's 340-foot homerun over the left field wall was the highlight of the first inning.

Three batters had big hits for the Outlaws in the third. Joey Morgan hit a two-RBI triple to left field, Shane Groth hit an RBI triple to left center, and Eli Boettner had an RBI double.

Weems and Joey Morgan both doubled in the fifth.

Morgan was two-for-two with three RBI, Groth was three-for-four with two RBI, Ryan Pollard was two-for-three with three RBI and Weems was two-for-four with two RBI.

On Friday, the Outlaws celebrated their 15th consecutive league victory when they defeated the Lions of Cottage Grove.

Nicky Blumm was the winning pitcher. Sisters had six runs on eight hits and the Lions had two runs on six hits.

The following day Sisters demolished Grant Union (GU) at home in a non-league double-header. The Outlaws crushed GU 21-9 in the first game and then beat them 11-4 in the second.

Groth was the winning pitcher in the first game, which pushed him to 11-0 for the season. Weems was the winning pitcher of record in the second game.

Hitting stars in the first game were Boettner, Weems, Groth, Calarco and Alderman and in the second Selig, Morgan and Groth were the standout hitters.

Coach Steve Hodges told The Nugget that the Outlaws have improved week by week, and the younger players have taken a big step since the start of the season.

"Bryce (Alderman), Sam (Calarco) and Shane (Groth) have all provided great leadership to the team and really stepped up their game. Joey (Morgan) has also been solid for us all year. I think they've really motivated our younger players and played a large part in the good team chemistry that we have."

The Outlaws will play in a play-in game at home against Cascade on Thursday, May 17. The game is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
