News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The boys lacrosse team's stellar season quickly came to an end when they lost 9-7 to a very strong and physical Westview team on May 18, at Reed Stadium.
Sisters did not have a strong first-half performance and were fortunate to be down only 2-1 at the half, with their lone goal coming from Cris Smoot. The defense kept the game tight.
Westview scored four more times in the third quarter and held the Outlaws scoreless. At the close of the third quarter Westview was on top 6-1.
In the fourth quarter, the Outlaws came to life. William Saunders scored on a feed from Beau Fitzke in a man up situation, and then Smoot recorded a goal on an assist from Scott Nelson to narrow Westview's lead to 6-3.
The Wildcats put in two goals of their own, and with five minutes left on the clock held an 8-3 advantage over the Outlaws.
Sisters kept battling and refused to give up. Smoot, Fitzke and Saunders each scored goals for the Outlaws, and with one minute left had closed the gap to within one goal at 8-7.
Sisters got possession of the ball and Smoot fired a laser shot that Coach Bill Rexford thought had tied the game. But, the Westview goalie made an incredible save, tossed the ball up the field and the Wildcats scored on a fast break to win the game 9-7.
Rexford said, "I love the game, this team, and it's amazing that despite the fact we didn't play our best, we still had a chance to win it. This team finished with 15 wins, six losses, and a host of program accomplishments behind them. They have carried forward Outlaws Lacrosse to another level, and now it is up to the younger boys to carry it forward."
