Girls tennis out in first round of state tennis

The girls' tennis team sent their No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams to the state tournament held at the University of Oregon, May 17-19; they were both knocked out in the first round.

Oregon Episcopal took championship honors at the tourney, and Crook County was runner-up. St. Mary's finished third and Valley Catholic took fourth.

Jen Houk and Elise Herron (No. 1 doubles) fell 0-6, 2-6 to Kenzi Harris and Mallory Martz of LaSalle. Shelbi Thompson and Paige Tosello (No. 2 doubles) lost 1-6, 1-6 to Isabel Robertson and Meridith Loy from Oregon Episcopal School.

"Our girls were pretty nervous being at the state tournament and playing at that level," said Coach Marti Dale. "Their opponents dominated play and the girls just couldn't get their rhythm going."

Dale told The Nugget that the team will lose several senior players but still anticipates a great season next year.

"We will...miss our seniors, but we do have many girls returning and we have good incoming freshman," stated Dale. "I think we will have a solid, competitive team."
