News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The Sisters School Board will appoint a member to fill a vacant seat left by the resignation of long-time board member Glen Lasken.
The remaining term expires on June 30, 2013. Applicants must live in the school district, not be a district officer or employee, and be a qualified voter in the district.
Board chair Christine Jones said that engaged, public-spirited individuals should not shy away from applying due to concerns about the scope of the volunteer job.
"I think people are scared that it's just a huge, overwhelming time commitment," she said. "I'd like to emphasize that it is a reasonable commitment of time."
Jones said the board meets twice a month on average and there is some review of materials required in advance of those meetings. Beyond that, board members can essentially establish their own level of involvement and activity.
While the interim term will run for one year, the board is seeking someone who would be interested in running for election after the interim term expires.
"That would be our preference," Jones said. "It takes some time to become familiar with the issues the board deals with. If the person was interested in running for election, that would be a plus."
Particular skill-sets and areas of expertise will be considered, but the fundamental qualifications are a commitment to education and an ability to work effectively with board members and staff.
"We want sensible people who really have the interests of all the children in our district at heart," Jones said. "We'd like someone who plays well with others."
