News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Students and faculty from Redmond High School presented the Sisters-Camp Sherman fire district with a painted wooden logo last Monday. The piece will be placed in the main lobby of Sisters Fire Hall.
The project was completed by the Construction Technology and Independent Living Skills classes at RHS, under the direction of construction technology Instructor Mark Winger. The students of the Independent Living Skills class have moderate to severe disability conditions with significant medical needs. These students contributed to the project with various skills such as painting, carving, scroll saw design and cutting.
The construction technology students used CAD/CAM, CNC and laser technology to produce their portion of the project.
"Winger and his students are very proud of the work that they have done to create this exceptional piece of art, which we are excited to display as the focal point of our main fire station's lobby," said Deputy Fire Chief Jeremy Ast.
Winger began producing logos for fire departments after the 9/11 attacks, which took the lives of many New York City firefighters.
Hearing of the program, Sisters fire district administrative assistant Julie Spor contacted Winger about creating a logo carving for the department. Spor and Deputy Chief Ryan Karjala provided the district patch and a digital image of it as the basis for the carving.
