SPRD offers youth adventure camps

Sisters Park & Recreation District (SPRD) is offering week-long adventure camps for Sisters youths all summer called Earth Keepers with the theme of "stewardship of the earth." Each week will focus on a different area of the earth, its environment and living things, and include activities such as field trips, art projects, music and lots of indoor fun and outdoor adventure.

Offered to kids in grades one through six, beginning the third week of June, each of the eight adventure camps runs Monday through Friday with half-day morning, half-day afternoon and full-day options. A similar 9-week program beginning the second week of June is offered for 3-to-5-year-old youths called "Little Keepers." It will have the same "stewardship of the earth" theme but the field trips and activities will be geared toward that younger age group. The Little Keeper camps will offer the same two half-day or full-day options.

"We're excited about it," said Anne Heath, SPRD executive director. "These programs are action packed, fun and they give kids a chance to see that they have the ability to be stewards of their environment."

In the morning the kids will perform activities at SPRD and in the local area, and they'll be entertained by special guests and guest speakers. In the afternoons they'll head outside for field trips and all kinds of outdoor activities.

The adventure camps include Super Fridays with morning activities in local parks and afternoons at the swimming pool. Also included for Earth Keeper adventure campers is an art program called "Creative Genius" directed by Sisters teacher and artist Clay Warburton.

The Adventure Camps are run by SPRD staff and Sisters teachers. Teacher Kirk Albertson is the Outdoor Adventure Leader. The program is partially funded by The Roundhouse

Foundation.

The Earth Keeper Adventure Camps were inspired by a college project of Sisters resident Jen Binks and based on the "Keepers of the Earth" book series. "These are quality programs," said Heath, "that are lots of fun, educational and they keep kids busy."
