News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
There's nothing as traditionally American as an old-fashioned Fourth of July picnic in the park.
For the third year, Sisters Habitat for Humanity
will host just such a picnic at Creekside City Park, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, July 4. The event will be held in conjunction with the third annual Recycle Run. Registration for the run is from 7 to 8 a.m. or online at www.sistershabitat.org (see related story, page 15).
The picnic will include live entertainment, a silent auction, traditional food, a pie contest coordinated by Three Sisters Fellowship, free cotton candy, and old-fashioned games and activities.
"We'll have games for the kids, and they're 50 cents apiece," said Beth Hanson, game coordinator. "They're all the old, funky games from when you were a kid."
The games aren't just for the kids, though. All ages are encouraged to participate.
Military Parents of Sisters will open the picnic, honoring veterans and currently serving troops.
Carol Neary, event chairperson, is excited about the addition of The Occasion of Honor program, which includes music of The Girls from Company B.
"It is great to start Independence Day off by remembering those whose service made it possible," she said.
The program will kick off the picnic at 11 a.m.
The Picnic in the Park is a fundraiser for Sisters Habitat for Humanity. Sponsorships are still available through the "Be One of Us" campaign, which invites people to sponsor the event at a rate of $10. According to organizers, nearly 100 people have signed on.
