News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
This past April, a group of Sisters High School students travelled to the Oregon Model United Nations conference in Eugene. This three-day-long event is the pinnacle of a Model UN student's year. The six delegates from Sisters, representing the country of Honduras, were very active in the proceedings of the conference. From proposing a resolution to form a central banking system in Central and South America to orchestrating complex international trade agreements with other countries, the ambassadors were very busy.
"While we were disappointed that our monetary policy proposal died in committee, we can celebrate the historic bananas-for-unlimited-tea-and-biscuits exchange we crafted with Great Britain," noted Nicky Blumm, a founder of the SHS Model UN club. "We were also able to pass a resolution on terrorism, which was a major success for us."
Model UN at Sisters High School was launched two years ago when history and government teacher Bill Rexford encouraged student Nicky Blumm to develop the club as an elective. Although the SHS Model UN Club is almost entirely student-run and self-motivated, the students are looking to expand the program and take it up a notch. Next spring, Sisters High School will represent Lebanon at the annual meeting April 11-13, 2013 at the University of Oregon in Eugene.
Club members are currently searching for a mentor with experience in international affairs, social studies or debate who would be able to come in several times per week during winter trimester (roughly December to March) to spur discussion about current events, involve participants in local international affairs opportunities and serve as a mentor at the annual conference.
Prospective mentors should contact Drew Corrigan at [email protected] or Nicky Blumm at [email protected]
