News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
If comfort food with an international flavor sounds like just your kind of fare, you'll find a happy abode at The Porch.
Sisters' newest dinner house is now serving its "artisan comfort food" at the corner of North Elm Street and Adams Avenue.
The Porch is a family affair. Chef Caryl Hosler is well-known to the Sisters community for her work at Jen's Garden and Thyme. She won an Iron Chef competition with T.R. McCrystal. Sons Jon Hosler and David Elliott have joined her in the enterprise.
"This has been a lifelong dream of Jon and me - to have a restaurant together," said Hoisler.
Chef Jon Hosler has moved to Sisters from Los Angeles, where he worked in restaurants and in catering for the film industry.
The chefs bring a reputation for high quality and a relaxed hometown sensibility to the table.
"We both come from a fine dining background, but we wanted something fun, playful, casual," Caryl said.
"One of the reasons we called it The Porch is that we want people to have that comfortable feeling," Jon said.
The Porch, located in a cozy 1947 building that was once a home, seats about 40 (outdoor seating is also available) and the serving approach is small-plate, tapas-style that encourages sharing. They have a full liquor license and so will be serving cocktails as well as wine by the glass. The wine list is unique and diners are encouraged to explore.
The Hoslers want to "get people tasting - trying new things," Jon said.
The goal is to provide an affordable, high-quality dining experience.
"Between the burgers and fries and the fine dining - we want to be right in the middle," Jon says.
The food will appeal to a wide range of tastes, with unique combinations like shrimp-and-grits, traditions like bread pudding and international flavors like Greek moussaka. Everyone from carnivores to vegans will be accommodated.
"We'll be catering to the gluten-frees, the vegetarians, the vegans," Caryl said. "I want anybody to come in, no matter what their dietary restrictions, (and know) they'll get a great meal."
Hosler's son David Elliott will be working in the kitchen and on the maintenance of the restaurant. He's already given The Porch his personal seal of approval.
"I would eat here," he said. "I would love to eat here!"
A group of Sisters investors is backing the Hoslers' venture, and Caryl expressed great appreciation for their faith in her.
"Cris Converse is one of those investors. She's been working hands-on to get the restaurant ready for opening, and she'll continue working, managing the front of the house."
