SPRD offers adaptive programming

When the school bell rings on the last day of school, what is a student to do?  There is a large choice of recreational programs available, sports camps, Sisters Library events and other activities provided in the area.

However if the student has special needs, the choice has been limited. Not so this summer.

The Community Schools Initiative, Sisters School District, Sisters Park & Recreation District and Outlaw Martial Arts have come together to offer Taekwondo as well as recreation and educational opportunities for students with special needs in the district for the summer months.

Beginning on July 11, Outlaw Martial Arts, owned by Marty and Jaymie Kaczmarek, will offer an eight-week adaptive Taekwondo class on Wednesdays.

Beginning on Friday, July 6, a weekly recreation program begins, which will include fun field trips, visits to local lakes and streams, and a dinner and movie night at SPRD.  This program will run on Fridays for eight weeks through August 29.

Sherri Hermens will serve as the program manager for the summer program, giving the students continuity in the services that they receive during the school year.

Sisters Park & Recreation District is also working with both Bend and Redmond park districts to look at combining programming to offer even more opportunities to Sisters residents with special needs year-round.
