News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Folks in Sisters Country can indulge their inner foodie while supporting scholarships for worthy students.
The Sisters chapter of P.E.O. (a philanthropic educational organization that supports women's educational aspirations) has created "Savoring Sisters," a cookbook whose proceeds will support the Elizabeth Danforth Fund, which provides scholarships to Sisters High School seniors planning to attend college in Oregon.
The cookbook, a couple of years in the making, is crammed with recipes from P.E.O. members across Sisters Country.
"We started this in the summer of 2010," said P.E.O. member Jan Shaver. "We have 51 members now and people contributed anywhere from two to 10 or 15 recipes."
Recipes range from tasty appetizers to soups and salads to lunch and tea choices and enticing entrées.
"We asked members to send their best and favorite recipes," Shaver said.
They received 650 and pared it down to 500.
"Savoring Sisters" comes in a mid-size three-ring-binder format, which allows cooks to keep the book flat on the counter (always an issue with cookbooks) and remove recipes for filing elsewhere.
The book features cover photography by Jessie-Lea and Curtiss Abbott and interior photography by P.E.O. chapter members.
The P.E.O. Sisterhood is selling the cookbook at A Quilters Affair this week and will have a table at the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show on Saturday at Metolius Property Sales on the corner of Cascade Avenue and Spruce Street.
The cookbook is already selling like hotcakes.
"Bill Merrill, bless his heart, takes them wherever he goes and he'll call and say, 'Jan, I just sold six; I have a check!'" Shaver noted.
The group has already sold through a third of its first print run of 1,000.
