News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The first Black Butte Ranch Bike Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, August 11 at the lodge area at Black Butte Ranch.
A day of educational fun and activities for kids and adults will include bike safety checks, bike clinics, guided mountain and road bike rides, a kids bike rodeo and obstacle course, and more.
"What we're always looking at is how to make the ranch as safe for bicyclists as possible," said Sgt. Frank Klejmont, of the Black Butte Ranch Police Department. "We find that the most serious accidents on the Ranch involve adults, mainly because the kids wear helmets and the adults don't."
The Bike Fair is a collaborative effort between the Ranch Police Department, the Sisters Trails Alliance, Ray's Food Place, Target, and Blazin Saddles bike shop in Sisters. Jackie Zanck, owner of Blazin Saddles and retail manager at the Glaze Meadow Rec Center will demonstrate bike safety and how to check your bike before heading out on a ride.
The bike safety class and obstacle course will be taught by Brian Potwin of CommuteOptions.org.
"The whole issue for the police department is to keep people safe," said Klejmont. "In fact, when we catch an entire group of riders out on rides without helmets, the kids get a coupon for a free fountain drink at the Lakeside Bistro here at the Ranch."
There will also be paddleboard demos at Phalarope Lake next to the Lodge.
