Girls soccer squad clips the Falcons

The girls soccer team posted a 4-0 shutout over Elmira at home on Tuesday, October 9, which puts them in second place in league standings, just behind Junction City.

Sisters' first goal of the contest came in the 19th minute of play. Haley Carlson served a beautiful corner kick which dropped right in front of the net. Liz Stewart got her foot on the ball and drove it into the net for the goal.

Coach Audrey Tehan told The Nugget that the combination of Carlson's serves and Stewart's finishes has become one of the Lady Outlaws' best scoring plays.

At the half Sisters held a 1-0 lead.

Carlson scored eight minutes into the second half from a low line drive shot into the lower-right corner of the net. Stewart followed with her second goal of the night at the 63-minute mark. Stewart and Natalie Ambrose worked together to break up the Falcon's defense, which allowed Stewart to make a powerful shot into the left side of the goal.

Sisters' final goal came from Emily Corrigan in the last minute of the contest. Ambrose ran the ball down the field from the Outlaws' defensive half past three Elmira defenders clear to the end line where she cut the ball back for a beautiful cross. Corrigan ran onto the ball and drove it into the net with her head.

"It was a beautiful goal that really demonstrated the skill-level of our team," said Tehan. "It showed Natalie's ability to dribble the ball all the way down the field and then make a perfect cross which Emily was able to place right into the side corner of the net."

Anna Ortega stepped in as sweeper, which allowed Stewart to move up into the midfield with Ambrose and Michaela Miller. The strong play from the trio of midfielders proved to be a deadly weapon for the Lady Outlaws.

Danielle Rudinski and Natalie Ambrose had standout games at midfielder.

Sisters finished the game with 30 shots on goal and all of them hit the goal frame but four.

"We have been working hard to improve our shooting technique and accuracy," said Tehan. "We're trying to keep the shots low, not get overly excited and just drive the ball over the goal every time. It was great to see how much more accurate our shots have become. The girls played their best game yet and played beautiful soccer. They connected great passes and made great plays down the sidelines into our offensive end of the field."

The Outlaws will play at Cottage Grove on Thursday, October 18.
