Sisters grad named Athlete of Week

NEWBERG - Totaling five points on two goals and an assist in her only game of the week, George Fox midfielder Michelle Young was been named the Bruin Women's Athlete of the Week for October 8-14, and also received honorable mention for the Northwest Conference Women's Soccer Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week.

Young, a freshman from Sisters, was instrumental in the Bruins' first conference win of the season, a 4-0 victory over the Pacific Boxers at home on Wednesday night, October 10.

After Melanie Gaither gave the Bruins a 1-0 lead with a goal less than 10 minutes into the game, Young picked up an assist with a perfectly placed cross from the right sideline to the middle of the box for Jamie Galbreath, who scored to give the Bruins a 2-0 halftime lead.

Young then added two goals of her own in the second half, the first when she secured a loose ball that had been kicked away from Gaither just outside the keeper's box and lofted it high over the Pacific keeper and through her hands. The second came on a penalty kick after Gaither was fouled in the box and had to leave the game.

Unfortunately for the Bruins, Young sustained a fractured wrist late in the game and was unable to play in their other game of the week, a 2-0 loss at Willamette on October 13. With six games left, the Bruins are hopeful that she may be able to return late in the season with a soft cast.

In the latest NWC stats, Young ranks first in penalty kick goals (2), sixth in goals (5, T) and points (12, T), ninth in shots (27, T), 12th in assists (2, T), and 14th in shots on goal (12, T).

The George Fox University Bruin Athlete of the Week Award for both men and women is presented throughout the sports seasons to recognize and honor outstanding athletic achievements and records by Bruin student-athletes.

In addition, Michelle Young was Northwest Conference Offensive Student-Athlete of the Week: September 17-23 (HM).
