Jack Haney passed away October 17 at St. Charles Medical Center in Bend.
Jack was born December 4, 1920, in Missoula Montana, to Charles Augustus and Grace (Olson) Haney.
He was raised in Missoula and Butte, Montana, and eventually Enumclaw and Yakima, Washington.
His family was large, and Jack started working at age 12 while attending school.
With two years of college completed, he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving with distinction, (DFC, Purple heart with clusters) flying dozens of bombing missions out of North Africa.
Shot down twice, Jack bailed out of his third B-17 at 20,000 feet over the Ploesti Oil Fields of Romania, where he was captured and interned at a P.O.W. camp.
Jack was a member of the first American P.O.W.s to be freed and repatriated to the U.S.A. as WWII wound down.
Post-war, Jack returned to finish his education at the University of Washington, graduating in international marketing, and marrying the love of his life, Marjory (Gardner) Haney. They enjoyed 65 wonderful years together.
Jack began his business career with Simpson Logging company, eventually rising to Senior V.P. of marketing. He retired to Black Butte Ranch in the early 1970s, enjoying many hours on the golf course. He also served many terms on the Sisters School Board.
Jack loved his family, golf, hiking, reading, and arguing politics, but will be most remembered for his smiling face and sense of humor.
He is survived by wife Marjory; son Rod; daughter Jill (Haney) Neal; grandchildren John of Sisters, Brian of Venice Beach, California, and Christy (Montermini) Neal; and great-grandchildren Leo, Abe, and William Montermini, of Olympia, Washington.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice, and American Ex-Prisoners of War (AXPOW).
A celebration of life will be held November 17 at Black Butte Ranch Community Center.
