City manager up for annual evaluation

The lame-duck Sisters City Council will take its last significant action this week when it undertakes the annual evaluation of City Manager Eileen Stein.

Annual performance reviews are usually a rather routine affair. However, this review represents the resolution of a year-long effort to reconcile Stein and members of the city council. Last January, three councilors - Sharlene Weed, Pat Thompson and Wendy Holzman - sought to terminate Stein's employment, citing a desire for different leadership. They retreated from that position after a public meeting in which numerous community members expressed support for Stein. The council and Stein then entered into a lengthy mediation process led by volunteer facilitator Judge Paul Lipscomb.

The council gave Stein an informal progress report last summer.

Stein's relationship with the council will reset in the wake of this evaluation in any case. Three new councilors will come on board in January, with a new mayor to be selected in its first session.
