News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon

Sisters artist tapped for poster

Alena Nore was tired after a long day singing Christmas carols with the Sisters High School Jazz Choir. Then the freshman got a piece of news that energized her: Her painting had been selected as the poster image for the 2013 Bend Winterfest.

"I was just super excited," Alena said.

She told The Nugget that her interest in art "started when I moved to Sisters (in the seventh grade). I started to get more involved in art."

Her watercolor-and-ink composition, which won a contest to be selected as the poster image, depicts some of the highlights of Winterfest - stilt walkers and musicians, with the smoke stacks of the Old Mill looming in the background.

The painting was selected in a popular vote as it hung with other entries at OnPoint Credit Union's downtown Bend branch earlier this month.

Alena doesn't have a preferred medium.

"I just do what's handy; what's around," she said.

Along with the honor of being the 2013 poster artist, Nore will receive a $100 gift card from OnPoint Credit Union and a framed poster.
